Only a handful of bridges around the world have achieved iconic status, and Tower Bridge is one of them. Judging by its name and appearance, you might think the bridge is an original part of the adjacent Tower of London. Its construction, however, was completed in 1894, centuries after the fortress. Head into one tower and up to the walkway 42 m (138 ft) above the River Thames to reach the other tower. You'll have a panoramic view of the city along the way. Stop by the exhibit in the east walkway to watch a video about the bridge's construction, and to see a gallery of photos of 20 significant bridges around the world. Head into the Victorian engine rooms, where you can experience a recreation of the motor-based operation of the bridge at the time of its inauguration and view a virtual bridge-lift. If your visit to the area will be near dusk, stop to see the bridge lit up. Plan my London trip by asking Inspirock to come up with tips and suggestions.

Never crowded, and worth taking the time to fully absorb the pleasure of going up the steps (a modern lift is also available) and peering out through the windows at the ever smaller people, buses, and boats passing beneath. Then one reaches the top... You can see so much of town from there, and even get a sticker if you successfully traverse the glass floor! For the children, and some adults, there's a booklet one can stamp as one explores the structure. Once you return back to the deck, you can then follow the line to the south bank, and have a look at the old workings, and of course, the compulsory shop. Definitely a part of a great day out.

This was really unexpected. We thought rather than just walk over we'd try the visit, as the high walks sounded intriguing. Very impressed. There is a nice balance of history and views, and the staff are fantastic. The glass floor is a novelty that provides unique views of the road and river below. The engine room highlights just what a magnificent piece of engineering this is. Well worth a visit.
