A British Concorde, Spitfire, and Lancaster are among the over 200 international aircraft at IWM Duxford, Britain’s largest aviation museum. Housed on a former Royal Air Force airfield, the museum also has tanks, military vehicles, and naval vessels, including two midget submarines from World War II. A Battle of Britain exhibit is located in an original 1917 Belfast. A museum within a museum, the strikingly modern American Air Museum honors the 30,000 U.S. airmen who died flying from UK bases during World War II, as well as those who fought in battles since then. This was my first time at the Imperial War Museum Duxford. We drove up and arrived early. Instead of sitting in the car for an hour waiting for it to pen went to Cafe 19 which is inside the Duxford Community Centre. It's a 5 min drive away. The breakfast was lovely and we head back for our entrance time and went straight in. A short queue but only a few mins and then, once we cleared the gift shop we were in. We hit the nearest hanger first, there are about 4 or 5 big hangars all with different collections in them. The furthest away is the land war, tanks, Normandy landings etc. So if you want to see that maybe head there first as I was exhausted by the time we got there. Lots of walk, standing, looking and reading. My brother in law has been a number of time before and said the displays have changed. I am guessing some would be difficult due to the shear size of the planes. I say that as I am not a plane enthusiast so I can't see myself returning for a second visit. He loved it (again), my wife was not keen so she got the park and ride to Cambridge and had a lovely day too so if you have someone who is not so keen, that is another option for them. We took a picnic and happily ate that on the lawn. Overall, they have an amazing array of aircraft and the walks between the hangars gave us a lovely dose of fresh air and you can watch the various aircraft taking off and landing.
Lucky enough to see the 12 flying Spitfires assembled in one hanger. Met some incredible volunteers who are passionate about their job and who took the time to speak to everyone who had a question. Also met one volunteer who was genuinely interested in my colleague's story about the supercharger fitted to the Merlin engine. Brilliant to be able to go inside Concorde and certain other aircraft.
