Hoverla, Vorokhta

Mount Hoverla at 2061m, is the highest mountain in Ukraine and part of the Carpathian Mountains. The mountain is located in the Eastern Beskides, in the Chornohora region. The slopes are covered with beech and spruce forests, above which there is a belt of sub-alpine meadows called polonyna in Ukrainian. At the eastern slope there is the main spring of the Prut River. The name is of Old Hungarian origin and means 'snow mountain'. Hoverla is composed of sandstone, a sedimentary rock type. The date of the first ascent is unknown. In late 19th century the mountain became a notable tourist attraction, especially among tourists from nearby cities of Galicia. In 1880 the first tourist route between the peak of Hoverla and Krasny Luh was marked by Leopold Wajgel of the Galician Tatra Society. The following year the first tourist shelter was founded there. In the 20th century the mountain increasingly gained popularity as an extreme sports site. Some routes are classified as 1A in the winter period, according to the USSR grading system. Nowadays because of its prominence too many unskilled extreme-lovers are taking attempts to climb it in winter, resulting in regular frostbite or even deaths. The most popular approach to the summit starts from the tour-basa Zaroslyak on the mountain's east face and gains more than 3,600 vertical feet along a steep path with few switchbacks. There is a steeper route and a more gentle one but a lengthier one .

  • Mount Hoverla is the highest mountain and the highest point in Ukraine. Hoverla is located on the border of the region. The mountain is 2,061 meters above sea level. Back in 1880, the first route for tourists climbing to the top of the mountain was opened here. At the very top there is a small flat platform, with which it is convenient to contemplate the enchanting landscapes. The foot of the mountain is covered with coniferous, beech forests, rising above, you can see the slopes with beautiful subalpine meadows. The city of Goverle is home to more than forty-five species of various animals and plants, which are listed in the Red Book of Ukraine. In the second half of summer (July-August) the slopes of the mountain are simply strewn with blueberries. This significantly inhibits the tourist ascent to the top, because from juicy, delicious berries simply impossible to break away. At present, Hoverla is part of the Carpathian National Park, and it is a protected protected area.

  • Not so much struck by the mountain, as the ascent to it. Really fabulous forest, streams, mushrooms...there are just no words to describe it - it needs to be felt. Climbing will say not for squish, still hard. Well, at the very top is amazing the surrounding view!!! The rapture is indescribable.

  • Beautiful. Its a little deceiving looks like an easy hike, but it's a little longer than expected. Well worth the hike.
