Mapu'a 'a Vaea Blowholes, Tongatapu Island

Admire the dramatic spray of Mapu'a 'a Vaea Blowholes a series of natural blowholes in the rocky coastline of Tongatapu. When waves crash into the reef, the water pressure rushes through natural channels of volcanic rock, sending sky-high flume-like geysers soaring into the air seemingly out of nowhere. You can either take in the spectacular views from a lookout point, or walk along the edge of the track to get the full effect. Look for small kiosks selling handmade souvenirs, and come prepared with your own snacks as there are no other amenities nearby. • On the right day, with the waves rolling in, these blowholes present a magnificent spectacle. Whales can be seen just offshore. Also, visit the giant Tsunami rock nearby.  more »
  • Never had seen any blowholes, so it was interesting to see. It is a 20 min drive from the airport. I would recommend it.  more »
