A World Heritage-listed attraction, Site of Palmyra once served trade caravans crossing the desert. After a major earthquake, the site remained lost for over five centuries--archeologists finally rediscovered it in the 17th century and excavated in 1924. A fusion of Roman and Persian influences, this desert gem stands as a major archaeological remnant of the various civilizations that once flourished in this part of the world.
