St. Florian's Gate, Krakow

#32 of 729 in Things to do in Krakow
Visit one of the architectural centerpieces in the city's old town at St. Florian's Gate. Built in the 14th century as part of a defensive wall against Turkish invasion, the tower has been restored since World War II, and its stone and colorful bas-relief of Saint Florin look almost new. The attraction also marks the beginning of the Royal Road, a route taken by the royal family through the center of town. At some point on your visit you may walk under the tower on your way into the center. Consider commemorating your introduction to Krakow with a photo near the iconic attraction. • It is curious how the outer part, the one that should give more sense of the grandeur, is the one a little more resigned while the part of the eponymous street is bright and more give a sense of the importance of this access gap. Curious the bas relief enamel on the top that portrays a man with a mustache, which is very rare for the time. The walkways that surround it are not passable except through access to a museum that is located in front of the small statue and next to the permanent exhibition of reproductions for sale by an artist. The perspective makes it look much smaller than it is if you look at the barbacane, placed right in front, probably because of the presence of trees and shadows. Useful advice? Then click on "Useful" or "Thank You, roberto4u68" and look at all the Warsaw reviews I've done.

  • A beautiful building and definitely worth the short stroll down St. Florian’s Street from the market square to take a look. The tower building sits as part of the only standing section of the fortification wall of Old Krakow, and is right beside the Barbican building which is also worth seeing whilst you’re there. On the hour, you should be in a good place to hear (and possibly see) the trumpet player in the top of the Basilica watchtower, which is nicely framed at the opposite end of the street.
  • Just wow! One of the most beautiful parts of the city and the entranceway to one of the busiest streets. Lots of history involving this place, and is the starting point for a lot of guided tours.
