Chiesa di Sant'Ignazio di Loyola, Rome

#14 of 526 in Historic Sites in Rome
Built to commemorate the founder of the Jesuit order, the 17th-century Chiesa di Sant'Ignazio di Loyola features an interior with gilded ornaments, marble reliefs, and remarkable frescoes. Admire the church's Baroque facade before heading inside to study the fresco glorifying St. Ignatius. Covering the ceiling of the nave, it creates an optical illusion of a dome. You can wander the plaza where the church is located to see examples of Rococo architecture. • Walking through Rome near the Pantheon and Piazza di Pietra you can almost unintentionally reach this church that does not have the large number of tourists who usually visit other places in Rome which makes the experience even better. From the front you can see that it is a Baroque Church very similar to the church of Gesú, and such was so that it was made in honor of Ignatius of Loyola that Founded the company of the Gesú. It's free entry and inside they offer you audio guide that has no cost and is free to collaborate, which of course we did. Inside you can see the immense fresco of the central vault of Andrea Pozzo that shows the revolution of Jesus in the world helped by St. Ignatius of Loyola. To see the dome you can stop in the center of the church, the chapels on the sides are also very beautiful, which makes the visit excellent.

  • The church is located in Camp Marzio and is definitely one of the places to visit if you are nearby. Architecturally it is basilica-ordered with columns in composite-revisited order. Of particular value is andrea Pozzo's quadratourism that occupies the entire surface of the ceiling; the spans are therefore only found in the aisles. The French organ is also noteworthy and deserves a look.

  • An image is worth a thousand words. Here you have three thousand words. These pictures say more than I could say. The details in this church are unbelievable. It is hard to belive people were able to build such a beautiful church in 1650. I recommend reading a bit about this church before visiting it!
  • I am not usually one for visiting Churches (or any religious venue) but we ended up popping into this one by accident and I am glad we did. It is absolutely stunning, with a beautiful structure covered in mesmerising paintings from the ground to the top of the dome. It had my 4-year-old asking me how on earth they managed to to make such a beautiful building without cranes and diggers- I had no answer other than to say ‘magic’. 😂 Needless to say, well worth a quick visit in between Pantheon and Trevi Fountains.
