Explore the dark side of Hungarian and European history at House of Terror Museum, a specialty museum focusing on fascist and communist regimes. The permanent exhibits feature artifacts from Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union, the fascist Arrow Cross Party, and the communist AVH (Hungarian State Protection Authority). Walk into the depths of violent, dictatorial moments that took place the 20th century by stepping into the museum's basement, where AVH prisoners were once held and tortured. These cells serve as a memorial to victims of the country's bloody regimes. Since it opened in 2002, this museum has become a member of the Platform of European Memory and Conscience. • There is an idea of the young policemen in changing the history of the country and the museum portrays the whining that the country has undergone wars. It's very touristic.

  • A place touted by tourist guides, the "House of terror" is a trap for tourists. We will pass on the friendly staff as a prison gate and the exorbitant price-about €28 for 2 people with audio guides (indispensable)-or the atmosphere wanting both solemn and creepy, halfway between the Memorial and the haunted house. We wander through corridors full of emptiness, ear headphones, tablet in hand, listening to the confused, soporific, historically dubious commentary and charging platitudes and generalities on totalitarian regimes. We could have paid a better tribute to the victims of this period. Interior decorators and architects, you will find interesting aesthetics, lovers of history, go your way and prefer the National Museum.

  • Impressive place. When you go in you really feel the burden of history. Every room was designed according to its individual story it’s trying to tell. There are a lot of real historical objects being displayed. In the basement you can see the real cells that enemies of the government were held in. Only downside for us: a lot of the quotes from political leaders or victims were printed exclusively in Hungarian. The audio snippets were also in Hungarian. We didn’t take the audio guide so we don’t know if that would’ve helped to understand the meaning of some rooms, but the audio guide was again the same price as the entrance fee so we opted for the no audio guide option. In each room there was a piece of paper with a text explaining the context. Sadly in a lot of the rooms they were out of the English text. Also: the text was just way too long. 12 pt font and almost in each room 1-1.5 pages of text. Would’ve been better to have a more compact version because we stopped reading after a couple of rooms because it just became exhausting All in all good experience though, worth a visit.
  • A pretty eerie place, but really eye-opening. I would definitely recommend this museum. If you don't speak Hungarian some of the exhibits won't make sense so be sure to ask for an audio guide (if they have any left, sometimes they run out on busy days)
