Hospital in the Rock Nuclear Bunker Museum, Budapest

4.5
#2 of 290 in Museums in Hungary
Part of the vast, interconnected caves beneath Castle Hill, Hospital in the Rock Nuclear Bunker Museum served as a nuclear bunker and emergency hospital during 20th-century wartime. During World War II, the 10 km (6 mi) of caves and cellars in this region were connected and used as a bomb shelter. You can visit the hospital portion, where doctors treated civilians and soldiers until July 1945, then again during the 1956 Revolution. Take a guided tour of the hospital, learn more about Hungarian history from 1938 up through the Cold War, and witness the difficult conditions under which doctors and nurses worked in these caves. • Interesting guided tour covering the hospitals role through the decades from the war up until the 80s/90s. Very powerful and moving. Guides in different languages though many seemed to prefer the English speaking one whilst using the translator provided.
  • It is an interesting museum to explore - especially due to the nature of it - built in a cave. You can learn something from quick-paced-scripted tour. There are couple of things I found quite disappointing - first one was the size of the group (rather large one) to fit as many people into a group as possible, thus leaving little to no time to explore some of the exhibits. It’s feels like a quick paced money making machine. Ticket price of 4000HUF is not fully justified. Photos are forbidden to be taken. Funny thing was there was a “fake tourist” at the end of our group making sure no one is taking any photos. That was quite demeaning and found if mentioned in the beginning, would be more transparent (wearing a badge..). Also he was the only guy not wearing a coat, frowning and not interested in the exhibition. Could not make it any more obvious. The tour give also asked in him English: “Sir, is no one else behind you?” To sum it up, go have a look, but lower your expectations not to be disappointed.
