Gellert Hill Cave, Budapest

3.8
Explore the natural rock walls and niches filled with statues and altars at Gellert Hill Cave, a grotto chapel that was originally home to Saint Istvan. The church was founded in 1926 when the Hungarian Paulite order of monks expanded the hermit's cave. In 1951, Communist secret police arrested an entire order of Pauline monks and the chapel was closed for nearly 40 years. Reopened by the Paulite order in 1989, after the fall of Communism, the church resumed services. The acoustics within the cave make music during services particularly moving and memorable. Many people still come to the church to worship, so remember to keep noise to a minimum as you walk from cavern to cavern. • You pay to enter the cave but all you see is a small cave that is a church. Absolutely nothing of a tourist nature. They conduct services and there was one going on when we went. Felt terrible imposin...  more »
  • After descending from Mount Gellert- came across a cave church! It's a complete delight)) In 1932 - 1934. Karoy Weichinger's project on the Side of Mount Gellert, on the Danube side of Mount Gellert, was built and consecrated! However, the monastery operated only for 17 years, with the advent of communist power it was closed. In 1951, the entrance to the temple was concreted for many years. It was not until 1989 that the authorities returned him to the Catholic Church. The temple was restored only in 1992. Today, church services are held again in the temple, this place again attracts many pilgrims. Tourists can also visit the temple. It was very upsetting that I was not given an audio guide on the Russian (((

  • I thought this place was fascinating. The audio tour was very informative. Inside is small, but worth visiting. Make sure you wear appropriate clothing for a church.
  • I came to this place after a long walk in the sun. I wanted a cool environment to relax my body. And I stumbled upon this perfect place. The entry fee with audio guide was just 2 Euros. In the audio guide you get to know about the history of the place and some aspects of the history of Budapest. Its like a church in a cave with depictions of special events in the form of sculptures (and also a washroom if you need one after a long walk 😅). The environmental is serene and relaxing.
