Hungary’s capital, Budapest, is famous for its hot springs all over the world. Many people visit Hungary’s famous thermal baths, but only a few know that the hot water rushing up from deep underground created something else too. In the limestone mountains, under Budapest, the heated water formed a huge cave system, which is thought to be more than 100 km long. The spas and caves of Budapest are planned to be declared part of the UNESCO World Heritage. The longest cave of Hungary is the 28.6 km long Pál-völgyi-cave system located in the Duna-Ipoly National Park. It is a real multi-level labyrinth system with most of its chambers under the residental districts of Budapest.

If you aren’t claustrophobic you can apply for our regularly scheduled cave tours which are guided by qualified caving guides. During the 2.5-3 hrs long tours you will often have to climb on walls and crawl through narrow passages so you have to be prepared for adventure. You will be supplied with overalls, helmets, and lights.

You don’t need to have any previous experience in caving.

Usually we have english guided tours on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays late in the afternoon. The tour can also be done at any other date, but in this case the minimum number of participant is 5 persons, and the tour should be booked five days earlier.

  • We did the adventure caving and it was a very cool experience that changes from the classic visits we would do in Budapest. It takes around 45 min from the center to go there, just be careful with the...  more »
  • First of all: "Caving under Budapest" was a great event. The cave is located outside the big city, but it is very easy to reach by bus train. Fortunately, EUR was also accepted as a means of payment at a good exchange rate at the time. However, the payment condition and exchange rates should be clarified in advance. We were a bachelor party of about 9 people and had Eva Csizmadia as our tour guide. We were very nicely received by her and escorted to the changing rooms, where we could lock our clothes in cupboard compartments on site. We got some kind of suits, which also carry miners, as well as safety helmets with a pit lamp. A map showing Budapest's tunnel network hangs out in the entrance. Already at the first sight you can see that the map or the tunnel network is quite large and in this basement several tours with different paths are possible. Unfortunately, our tour guide Eva did not speak German, but very good English. Eva is a very experienced tour guide. You quickly notice that Eva has turned her capping hobby into a profession and has been gaining experience in the Caving for ten years. It can look after all groups from large to small. Eva is relatively young, probably around 30 years, dynamic, very humorous and always has little jokes in stock that had made the tour very loose and entertaining. In addition, it is very helpful and makes sure that you use the right technique and reach the checkpoints safely when climbing. It has a very loose and friendly way and can tell you a lot about the whole cave story of Budapest. If you can speak English, you should definitely try to do the tour with Eva. The whole group were all thrilled:-):-):-):-) Caving in Budapest with Eva?? Again and again like!!! :-)
