One of the city's oldest enclosed courtyards, Begijnhof is surrounded by several historical buildings. This inner courtyard dates back to the 14th century and is situated on the Singel canal. View the characteristically Dutch-Gothic wooden homes of this medieval square, including the oldest wooden house in Amsterdam, Het Houten Huis, which was built in the Middle Ages. See the old courtyard gate, built in 1574, as well as the 19th-century gatehouse. If you walk along the southern edge of the courtyard, you can more closely see the features of the 15th-century English Church with its original medieval tower. An interesting historic site. Pretty and well preserved. Some interesting buildings and historic background. For most visitors will only amount to a walk through. Probably a half hour or less visit for most people. Worth a visit if in the area.
This is the perfect place if you need a little break from the Amsterdam city center without actually leaving it. A small church in a quiet backyard, only open until 5pm. It has some restricted areas that are reserved for the inhabitants of the buildings, but it's a nice spot for having a snack on a bench in the sun.
