First, the different transport options of the respective epochs are juxtaposed. Once upon a time, people came from Europe by sailing ship, which took them up to four months and used all their savings. Today, many immigrants come by plane, which takes less than 24 hours and usually costs a fraction of the total wealth. In the rooms that follow, visitors will learn about the evolution of Australia's immigration policy since the beginning of the settlement. In the exhibition rooms, individual fates are always given space. These vary from refugees from Congo and Yugoslavia to migrant workers from Italy and India. The museum is very interactive. For example, the visitor can take on the role of an interviewer and interview different migrants from different eras on a screen. You can then decide for yourself whether the seeker is allowed into the country or not. On another occasion, visitors can take on the role of migrant and take a language test with pen and paper, which was used until the late 1950s. You hear a text and you have to write it down on paper immediately. Depending on the error rate, one is rejected or subjected to further tests. The exhibition is critical of Australia's immigration policy, stereotypes and racism. Conclusion: We liked the museum very much. It is interactive, informative and questioning. That's what I want every museum to do. We were able to see most of the exhibition in 2.5 hours. A visit is highly recommended.
I wish I had left a bit more time to visit here! All of the exhibits are really beautifully put together so it's a pleasure to spend a couple of hours wandering through. The love exhibit was awesome, I found it really moving and cried about four times. The mix of audio and visual was great and there's something about wearing headphones that makes you feel like you're the only person in the room.
Spent close to two hours in the Love exhibit. It is amazing! So well done and touching, and showcases a wide variety of people and relationships. I rarely participate in audio tours, but I really enjoyed this one, both for the music and the spoken stories.
