A wrecked schooner that washed up on shore in 1846 is the namesake for the Coolangatta. Water still plays a big part in the town's fate because the seafood industry supports the town's economy. A thriving fishing fleet keeps the seafood restaurants well stocked with tasty crustaceans and salty delicacies. The city is rife with nostalgia, even celebrating the longing for the past with a festival, the Cooly Rocks Festival. The nostalgic vibe of the place inspired a popular song called "It's Hot in Brisbane, but it's Coolangatta," recorded in 1953. The location was also the setting for Muriel's Wedding when it took the name of the fictional town Porpoise Spit.
