Trip Planner: South Pacific / Australia / New South Wales / Byron Shire / Byron Bay / Cape Byron Lighthouse
Siting on the most easterly point of the country's mainland, Cape Byron Lighthouse was constructed in 1901 and fully automated in 1989. The iconic white tower attracts nearly half a million visitors each year, offering commanding views of the ocean and the coast. Take a guided tour and learn more about shipwrecks at the museum below. Remember to bring a pair of binoculars to watch humpback whales, dolphins, and turtles. You can also stay overnight at the former lighthouse keeper's residence or one of the two cottages once occupied by assistant keepers. Cape Byron Lighthouse Reviews
No parking! Drove up 3 days and drove down again. Leave the car at Wategos Beach and take the walking track. Easy walk to Lighthouse. Great view. more »
We had a guided tour of the lighthouse - to the top. Viewed the marine museum and display. Can look for whales and dolphin in the bay. Good access and parking. more »
Great place to go and get some exercise. If you are visiting the area, it's a great place to see the history. Highly recommend the lighthouse tour. Astounding views of nature and we even saw dolphins and turtles. The parking below the hill is free and the cafe has great ice creams. It is really nice the walk up to the lighthouse. Here's a fact it was the most eastern place in the whole of Australia! I give it a 5 because the views and experience was one of a kind.
Gorgeous views from up here, it’s possible to see pods of dolphins and turtles from here. Also whales migrating for 4 months of the year. It’s a very special place indeed. The lighthouse is run by friendly volunteers that provide tours but places are very limited. Parking is $8 at the top car park. If you’re able my advise is to walk from Byron, it’s a gorgeous walk of around 1 hour one way. Be careful which route you take as the Wategoes Bay route is much longer and more challenging. This place has one of the best views in Australia and I love it!
